Whose reputation was an Extasie
On neighbour States, which knew not why to wake,
Till hee discouered what wayes hee would take;
From whome what Princes angled, when they tryed
Mett a Torpedo, and were stupified.
And others studdies how hee would bee bent
Was his greate fathers greatest Instrument,
And actiust spiritt to convay and tye
This Soule of Peace, through Christianitie,
Was itt not well beleeud, that hee would make
This generall peace, the Eternall overtake,
And that his tymes might haue strechd out soe farr
As to touch those, of which they Emblemes are?
For to confirme this iust beliefe, that now
The last daies came, wee saw heaven did allow,
That but from his aspeckt, and Exercise
In peacefull times, Rumours of warr did rise.
But now this fayth is Heresie: wee mvst
Still staie, and vex our greate Grandmother, dust,
Oh is God prodigall? hath hee spent his store
Of Plagues on vs, and only now, when more
Would eate as mvch, doth hee grudge Miserie,
And will not letts injoye our curse. to die?
As for the Earth throwne lowest downe of all,
Twere an Ambition to desire to fall;
So God in our desire to die, doth knowe
Our plott for ease, in beinge wretched soe.
Therfore wee liue though such a life wee haue,
As but so many Mandrakes on his graue.
What had his growth and generation done,
When, what wee are, his putrifaction. [CW: Sustaines]
